Sickness and Bloggy Friends

You don't understand. I never get sick.

I mean, ever.

Which translates to, when I am sick. I'ts not pretty.  I am whiny.

So, although I had all these grand things I wanted to blog about today, I am way too tired to even think about it.  Maybe tomorrow I'll post about what I had planned.  Since I won't be at school. Gasp! This third grade teacher is never out.

Since I can't get my creative juices flowing, I wanted to thank two ladies that tagged me!  You can read that post here.  Thanks to Kaleigh at Kaleigh's Klassroom for tagging me! I am her newest follower and it looks like she just started in the blogging word, so check her out! Kelli from Pray Teach Love tagged me too! I'm her newest follower too!

I wish I could stop using exclamation marks, but I love them way too much!

Oh, and Ms. Smith (too bad I don't know your first name) at Adventures of Ms. Smith gave me the Favorite Follower Award! Thanks girl and thanks for your sweet comments!

I love all my followers, and they are all soooooooooooo wonderful! It was hard for me to decide, but I have to give it to my best partner in this blogging journey, Elisabeth.

Twins Teaching and Tacos

Since I might be breaking the rules since Elisabeth is my friend in real life.  I also have to give it to another Elizabeth!

Fun in Room 4B

She always leaves me great comments and I love reading her blog!

Have a good Wednesday!  I'll be at home, but I'd much rather be well and at school like the rest of you guys. :)

Measurement Unit and a Freebie!

It is such a gorgeous day here in North Carolina!  I love being able to wear just leggings, a dress and ballet flats! I am posting from my veranda, that's what I like to call the balcony at my apartment. It just sounds much more fancy.

So I finished my Mega Measurement Unit earlier this week.  With my crazy schedule and lack of Internet at the casa, I haven't posted about it!  It's a six lesson unit that covers the NC Standard Course of Study for 3rd grade, but you can use it for Common Core in third grade, and I think it would be useful for 4th and 5th grade too.  My second grade friends might be able to use some of the ideas too!

The main purpose of the unit is to build a good understanding of the measurement units, not just memorization of the conversions. This unit is very hands on and discussion is an integral part. It is not just a "worksheet" unit! I am so excited to start it with my kiddos on Monday!

There are 6 lessons:
Lesson 1: Measuring Capacity
Lesson 2: Introducing Customary Length
Lesson 3: Introducing Metric Length
Lesson 4: Measuring Metric Mass
Lesson 5: Measuring Customary Weight
Lesson 6: Measuring Temperature

Each lesson includes teacher directions and instructions, vocabulary cards a student exploration activity and a follow up sheet.  There are also pages for students to record unit benchmarks, a Bingo Review Game and 15 question Assessment with answer key.

You can grab it here for just $7.00..  Also, I'll give the unit to one person. You can enter twice! Just leave a comment saying you follow my blog.  You can leave one saying that you follow my TpT Store! I'll choose a winner Monday Night! :)

You guys know, I wouldn't post about this without giving you a freebie!  I have uploaded the Customary Length Lesson to TpT for free so you guys can see what the unit is all about.

I hope everyone else is enjoying their Saturday!!

Lovin' Reading!

Gotta get down on Friday.

This annoying song has been stuck in my head all stinking day.  Thank goodness it's true though! I am so looking forward to a great weekend!

It was a long week at school but it was a great week!  Like I've told you guys, we started reading workshop this week and I am already sold with it's awesomeness.  Yesterday, all but one of my students were reading either a chapter book or nonfiction book.  With some of my kids it has been like pulling teeth to get them to read a chapter book!

I set up my reading workshop using some awesome ideas I got from my teaching soul mate, Elisabeth and Twins, Teaching and Tacos.  Check out her post here about it!.  I based a lot of what I am doing on Beth Newingham's model. Gosh, I love her.

During our closing today, I asked the students how they liked doing reading workshop so far.  They had lots to say! They definitely seem to enjoy choosing their own books and they were so proud of the chapter books they had already finished!  We also got into a discussion about how it is important to be a good reader so we can do well in school and college and get a good job!  It made my heart happy.

We spent the week talking about a being a good reader and strategies to use to be a successful reader.  I am not very experienced at making anchor charts, and I wish I had pretty handwriting like some of my friends out there.

I tried to make a shark and it looks like an evil piranha. Oh and my kids love making fun of my pictures.

During our shared reading time, we are focusing on one skill a week.  This week was about using fix up strategies to help us understand words in our reading.

I made one for my students to put in their notebooks. You can grab it here if you want it!

Things have been so busy this week, that I felt like I haven't had one second to be crafty. So I had to have a pick me up.  We finished up our focus on fractions today, so we made these fraction sundaes.  I've seen them on Pinterest and  Amy has the pattern for $1.00 on TpT!

Well, that's all for now! Have a great Friday night friends! :)

Mixed Numbers, Dragons, Grammar

What do those three things have in common?

This post.

Does anyone else feel like they have had a crazayyyyy week? Is it Friday yet? One more day!

I haven't posted a freebie all week, but I have a FREEBIE at the end! :)

We have been doing so much this week.  We are finishing up our fractions unit, our test is tomorrow. So I'm crossing my finger praying hoping that my students do well.

In our state we have to teach mixed numbers. Sigh.  Fractions on a number line. Double Sigh. They are such hard concepts for third graders to understand.  So here are some of the things we did to try to get the concept down.

First we learned about mixed numbers and improper fractions.  We did some activities on the Smartboard and we created these mixed numbers using fraction circles.

The next day we talked about placing fractions and mixed number on a number line.  So I introduced the lesson by assigning each student a fraction or mixed number.  The students were put into two groups and raced to put the numbers in order from least to greatest.  Then we put them on a number line from there.

We were out of school on Monday, so we talked about the Chinese New Year on Tuesday.  I had already chosen a book to read, but I have a Chinese girl who was adopted by an American family in my class.  She brought in a book about the Chinese New Year, so we read that instead!  We made paper lanterns and easy dragon masks.  I wish I had time to make something cuter, but like I said this week has been CRAZYYY.

You have stuck with me this long, so here is a FREEBIE. Our spelling skill this week as about plurals and possessives. Here is a simple cut and paste activity to download at my TpT store!

This week we started reading workshop, so I'll be posting all about that tomorrow!

Hope you guys had a fabulous Thursday! :)

Lazy Weekend

So I wish I had a freebie to give you guys today!  Maybe I should have saved one of them from yesterday! (If you haven't grabbed my Valentine's Freebies, check them out here, they won't be free for long!)

I realized that I hadn't posted today and it made me feel incomplete. Typing that makes me feel boring in need of a life dedicated. This has been such a laidback weekend.  I had no papers to grade, because the quarter is over and grades are in the computer.  I had no big plans, unlike last week's wedding weekend.  So, I spent a lot of time vegging, cooking, cleaning, and working on my new Measurement Unit.  I'm pretty excited about it.  I'm pulling together several resources and activities I've done in the past to make a bangin' interactive, problem solving based unit. Be on the look out for it! Hopefully I can finish it up this week.

I also wanted to say that I have the greatest followers! I have had such incredibly sweet comments on my blog and TpT over the last few days.  I am a total dork and check the email on my phone constantly to see if I have a comment.  So I really do appreciate it guys! :)

Oh, and my giveaway ends Wednesday, make sure you enter!

Celebrate Good Times, Come On

So I know I have already blogged once today.  Shouldn't I be out having fun like a normal 25 year old.  Instead Mark and I are just sitting here and watching a movie. Well, he's watching a movie and I'm too busy making things or blog hopping.

This will be short and sweet.

Voting for the 2011 Fascination Awards Starts at midnight.  I'd love you forever if you voted for me.  I'd love you anyway though. Promise.

Online PhD Programs

Also, I sold my first thing on TpT tonight! Could I be a bigger dork?  Probably not, but I was still excited.  :)  In honor of the occasion, I just uploaded a free game to review regrouping.  I found out this week while my students were doing a simple review sheet that they had apparently forgotten when and how to regroup so I whipped this up.  Click here to download it for free! :)

Leave me some love if you download.  This girl loves her some comments. Please let me know that I'm not the only one sitting around and blogging. Yep. Thanks.
