Measurement Unit and a Freebie!

It is such a gorgeous day here in North Carolina!  I love being able to wear just leggings, a dress and ballet flats! I am posting from my veranda, that's what I like to call the balcony at my apartment. It just sounds much more fancy.

So I finished my Mega Measurement Unit earlier this week.  With my crazy schedule and lack of Internet at the casa, I haven't posted about it!  It's a six lesson unit that covers the NC Standard Course of Study for 3rd grade, but you can use it for Common Core in third grade, and I think it would be useful for 4th and 5th grade too.  My second grade friends might be able to use some of the ideas too!

The main purpose of the unit is to build a good understanding of the measurement units, not just memorization of the conversions. This unit is very hands on and discussion is an integral part. It is not just a "worksheet" unit! I am so excited to start it with my kiddos on Monday!

There are 6 lessons:
Lesson 1: Measuring Capacity
Lesson 2: Introducing Customary Length
Lesson 3: Introducing Metric Length
Lesson 4: Measuring Metric Mass
Lesson 5: Measuring Customary Weight
Lesson 6: Measuring Temperature

Each lesson includes teacher directions and instructions, vocabulary cards a student exploration activity and a follow up sheet.  There are also pages for students to record unit benchmarks, a Bingo Review Game and 15 question Assessment with answer key.

You can grab it here for just $7.00..  Also, I'll give the unit to one person. You can enter twice! Just leave a comment saying you follow my blog.  You can leave one saying that you follow my TpT Store! I'll choose a winner Monday Night! :)

You guys know, I wouldn't post about this without giving you a freebie!  I have uploaded the Customary Length Lesson to TpT for free so you guys can see what the unit is all about.

I hope everyone else is enjoying their Saturday!!

  1. That looks great.
Can I tell the truth? I hate teaching measurement. The other day we were talking about feet and I said the floor tiles were a foot long. A kid stuck his foot in it and said, "No, it's not." ......... I hate measurement. They have no background knowledge!!

    Also, I follow your blog!

  4. I've been finding a lot of inspiration from your posts. Being new to third grade I've been looking for an active/hands on teacher to follow and "steal" ideas from...Kudos to you and your endless ideas!

  5. I think my favorite post so far, since I've started following you, has been the tall tale wheels. I can't wait to do those next year with my class. Such a simple idea but something I had never thought of.
