The BEST and BRIGHTEST of 2012!

So I've been a little MIA for the past two weeks!  I have been insanely busy with...

My Roommate's Bachelorette Party

Then tons of other weddings festivities
Then Christmas of course! Our big family tradition is decorating cookies on Christmas Eve..
Not to mention the last week before break was crazy!  We had our Christmas Party, Polar Express Day and even a field trip!

So, I hope you all had a great Holiday!

I've been a busy girl and blogging has been the last thing on my mind!  But when I saw Christina's super fun linky I knew I had to link up! You know how us teachers LOVE to reflect.

I started seriously blogging around this time last year and it has been a great year for me!  I have grown so much as a teacher.  I've fallen in love with creating things to use in my classroom and share with the world.  I've made some great friends along the way too!  Plus, you guys have shown me so much love! :)

So first off,  the BEST thing that happened to me in blog land this year was discovering TPT and opening a shop!  I am amazed at what a difference TPT has made in my life.  This summer I had to move back in with my parents since my roommate was getting married and bought a house with her now husband!  TPT is allowing me to move back out and completely pay for rent and utilities!  How awesome is that?  It is a HUGE help for me!  I'm sure my NC friends definitely understand where I'm coming from.  (Thanks for our pay freeze NC....)

My BEST Post, or at least I think so...
Is my Classroom Reveal! I am in absolute love with my classroom this year!  It is just so pretty!

My BEST Post (according to Google)...
Last March, I posted about about teaching time with a fun foldable.  It's a freebie too!

My BEST Freebie (according to Google Stats)

Another Math Freebie about word problem clue words.
I don't teach with this mindset anymore, but it's still a great tool for struggling learners! (I'll share about that another time!)

My BEST and Most Popular Product I created

I love these foldables! It really does make map skills and geography so much more fun!

What would blogging be without good blogging friends?? It is hard to just pick a couple of friends, but I'll try.  These ladies have inspired me, made me laugh and been great friends!

Elizabeth from Fun in Room 4B
who let me stay at her house when she didn't know me!

Lindsay from My Life as a Third Grade Teacher
who was inspired to move to third grade because of me....haha!

Katie from Adventures of a 6th Grade Teacher
who is brave enough to handle middle school!

Dana at 3rd Grade Gridiron
who shares my love for MTV Shows

Julie from Second Grade Style
who is super sweet and is just starting up her TPT shop!

and my real life friend Elisabeth from Twins, Teaching and Tacos!
who started this blogging journey with me!

They aren't the only ones, but I can't make this post any longer!

Oh and one last Best! BEST Blogging Memory
The two meet ups I went to!

The BRIGHTEST thing  about this year is YOU!

Thank you so much to everyone who has left a comment, sent an email or purchased an item from me!  You guys have made me feel so special! Thank you sooooo much guys and gals! :)

(Oh even though I love you guys, I am apologizing in advance.  I had to put the jumble of number and letters verification back on.  I know, I hate it too, but I was getting like 20 emails a day of spam comments. Sorry guys!)

12 on the 12th!

You know I love a good linky party!  I tried to be better at taking pictures today, so when I remembered I grabbed my phone and grabbed some shots of my day!

1. We started a new unit today in math! It's all about perimeter and area. So today we looked for measurement benchmarks.  My friend here is measuring our Christmas Tree!

2. Two of my girls measuring our chart paper.

3. After math, we have snack and track.  I snapped a picture while I was walking on the track.

4. I forgot to take pictures during Reading &  Writing Workshop.  But I grabbed a pic of two of my kiddos meeting with their writing buddies!

5. After lunch, we had our Holidays Around the World Time.  You know integrating Social Studies with Shared Reading and still doing Christmas things. Whhhhaaaattt!  (can you tell I'm proud?)  We have been using Rachel's Holidays Around the World pack.  The kids have loved it!  Today we learned about Las Posadas, so we created poinsettia ornament picks.  I decided to wear mine in my hair.  Lots of my little ladies followed suit.  My boys loved the fact that they were poisonous plants.  Although one boy, decided to dance the tango with the ornament in his mouth like a rose.  I wish I would have got a picture of that!  Here are the directions for the ornament from First Palette.

6. Yesterday we learned about Hanukkuh, so the kids wanted to play our Hanukkuh Memory Game from Denise's pack again today.  So I obliged after Media & Music.

7. We finished our letters to Santa and created our Techy Santas!  These are from the Fab Reagan!

8. At the end of the day we had a few extra minutes so they went to their next rotation in our Holly Jolly Math Centers!

9.  I love this Mailbox!  I haven't shared it with you guys yet, and it just makes my little heart happy.  I bought it from Kirkland's the day after Thanksgiving.

10.  I had to leave right after school to ride with my mom and brother to Columbia, SC.  Adam left today on a mission trip for Hurricane Sandy Relief.  His school's BSU teamed up with some other colleges in SC and are spending the next week on Staten Island!

11. I really had to use the bathroom.  Like bad. So we stopped and this was what I found.  Apparently the bathroom was broken.

12. After we dropped Adam off, we went to Copper River Grill. I love that place and we don't have one in the Charlotte Area!

So those are my 12 pictures from today!  We didn't do much at school for 12-12-12, because well as you can tell we have been busy (and I kept forgetting to take pictures of everything else!).  But, while we were talking about it, I told my students that they would be 108 when 12-12-12 happened again.  Then I said, "Well I'll be ..." and I was interrupted by one of my not-so-sweeties yelling out, "150!"  Not cool!

Have a great Thursday!

Holiday Task Card Freebie

I loved hearing all of your holiday traditions!  So, I had my boyfriend choose 3 random numbers. He picked 2, 7 and 11.  So, congrats to Randi, Diane and Diving Into Learning!  Your government lapbook is in your inbox!

I have struggled fitting in math groups this year. Seeing how much my kiddos loved these centers really inspired me to fit them in my day more often.

So you guys have probably recognized my love for task cards! I started created a Christmas themed set like a month ago and I kind of forgot about them!  I found them on my computer tonight and finished them up for you guys!  Who's up for a Christmas FREEBIE?

It's a set of 10 Christmas themed Task cards to practice 2 and 3 Digit Addition and Subtraction. They include questions with regrouping and without regrouping. I made them for my third graders, but they would be great to challenge second graders and review for older kids! :)

You can download them here from TPT!  I'd love if you left some feedback too!

I hope you can use them with with your kiddos!

A Little Bit of This and That, Plus Mini Giveaway Time!

My goodness, this weekend has flown by!  Yesterday I went to a parade in the little town I teach in to see all my kiddos.  There is nothing like having candy thrown at your head and hearing "Ms. Polk" called out 227 times.  It's sweet!

Then tonight my family and I walked through the town of McAdenville. It's this small little community in our county, where every resident decorates, as well as the town!  I've been through it a billion times, but it's tradition!
With my little brother.  Well, he's not really little anymore!

Now on to teachery things, we are finishing up our government unit.  Time has really gotten away from me this year! Our content standards have doubled and I am really struggling to fit it in.  I'm trying my best to fit it in with shared reading.  So I created a lapbook and reading passages to teach exactly what I needed!

My kids have loved creating these foldables.  It really makes graphic organizers so much more fun!  My teammies have actually jumped on the foldable bandwagon too. It makes my little heart happy!

Click here to check it out at TeachersPayTeachers!

As always, if you would like a copy, leave a comment and I'll choose three people to receive it on Tuesday! Tell me what your favorite Christmas Tradition is! :) Be sure to leave your email.

Also, I'm helping out in two giveaways!

Both of these ladies are so fabulous! Be sure to check them out! :)

Have a great week!  I have a little less than two weeks before Christmas Break and I have so many things I want to fit in.  So it will be a very busy week for me!

Addition & Subtraction Christmas Trees

I love Christmas. I love crafts.  Third grade and CCSS makes me feel like I don't have time.  Well, I'm making time and throwing some CCSS in it for good measure.

If you were one of the 5 people that followed me at this time last year, you might remember my multiple trees.

I cut out a large triangle for each student.  They drew a number and wrote it on the star.  Then they created ornaments with the multiples.

Well, with our huge focus on adding and subtracting,  we are not teaching multiplication until January.  So after I cried a little about not being able to make the multiple trees, I modified them for addition and subtraction!

So, here is what we did.  The students drew four digit cards and used the digits to create 2-Digit numbers.  Then they created an addition problem. They repeated the process until they had 4 addition and 4 subtraction problems.

Then they checked their work with a calculator.

Then the crafting began.  I wanted them to all look different, so no templates or anything!  They cut out a large green triangle.  Then cut out the ornaments and star.  To create the ornaments, they folded a piece of construction paper and cut out on the fold so it would flip up.  Then, they wrote the equation on the front and the answer on the inside.

Then they added some decorations and Voila!

They turned out great and they all looked so different.

The whole process took a while but we needed some fun! To add to the fun, we listened to my Christmas Pandora station and sang along.  They really liked hearing me sing along to Alvin and the Chipmunks!

Do you have any fun Christmas craft ideas that incorporate math or another subject? I'd love to hear about it!

Be sure to check out this fun linky from 2nd Grade Pad!
