Let's Get Acquainted..Yah. Yah. Yah.

I hope you had a great Easter with your families! :)

I am linking up with Latoya today!
I love reading about the lives of my blogger friends, so I wanted to share a little bit about me with you guys!

The theme this week is  "My Favorites!"

Favorite Place to Shop-IKEA. I love going to browse at IKEA. I am lucky enough to only be 30 minutes away from the one in Charlotte.  My wallet may not always be as lucky....

Favorite TV Show- I watch a LOT of TV. It's a bad habit I know. So it was really hard to even narrow it two!  Of course I had to show some love to The Walking Dead! I'm pretty sad about the Finale tonight...
Then, my other favorite show is Girls on HBO. It's a crazy weird show with lots of inappropriate things, but for some reason I obsess over it.  I love the crazy Lena Dunham.

Favorite Sweet Treat- We have a local cupcake shop, Splat. The cupcakes are so good. That's a picture of the German Chocolate Cupcake. Sooo good. They have such good flavors.

Favorite Food- I love some sushi.  Especially, spicy tuna. YUM!

Favorite Restaurant- Chick-Fil-A, I'm a total Southern girl and I could eat Chick-Fil-A everyday for every meal!

Ok, on to a few other things.  Thanks to everyone who shared why they were thankful on Thursday!  Congrats to Erin! She won all of these cards! :)

Five For Friday-March 29th & A Spring Sale!

I love sharing some random things from my week with you guys, so I'm linking up with Kacey at Doodle Bugs Teaching! :)

1. We went on a field trip to the Biltmore House and it was so great! The kids LOVED it! They learned so much and they were just so adorable. It was crazy cold for March and it snowed all day. So it was gorgeous in Asheville, NC!

Is this a judge free zone?  I hope so.  You know those hard to love kids?  Well I had a few in my group that day.  I am glad that I did it, because it made me fall in love with them. They were just so cute and so excited.  That is one reason why I love field trips!

2. We started fractions last week.  Ugh. Fractions.  Does anyone else feel that way about fractions??  We do Investigations, so it's not unbearable.  The first few sessions are all about sharing brownies.  Today's lesson introduced mixed numbers using brownies.  So instead of using paper for brownies, I brought in brownies! I thought about making brownies, and I took the easy way out and bought some Little Debbies! :)
So I put the students in groups of 4 and gave each group 7 brownies. They had to figure out a way to share them equally!

They pondered and discussed.

They agreed as a group and cut up the brownies.

It was pretty cool, all of the groups cut their brownies in a different way. I only got two pictures though.

Then we gathered around each table and they shared! They did such a great job explaining their thinking. They have turned into such great math talkers!

Then of course they got to eat! :)

3.  I have another fun math activity too.  We actually did this one sometime last week, but I just found the pictures! :)
When we got our benchmarks back, my kids were seriously lacking on area and perimeter. So I threw in a little area activity. This activity shows how figures have the same area, but different perimeters.
We got out the the Geoboards, which all kids love!  The students worked in partners. They rolled two dice and added the two numbers together.  Then, they had to create a figure with the area that they rolled.  They could use whole units or 1/2 units (triangles, etc).

Then, they traded boards with their partner and counted the square units to double check the area.
I've added it into my Math Groups now and the kids love it!

4. We have also been learning about landforms.  I used two fabulous products from TPT!

This pack from Tara was awesome! It included awesome reading selections, flipbooks and quick checks! LOVED IT!  Great for my shared reading time!

This pack from Deana was awesome too! She has so many activities, I only wish I would have had more time to use them all!   She had these fun riddle cards, so I used them to introduce the unit. I posted them throughout our hallway and they went on a hunt!

Click on the cover pages above to check out the products!

5. Last, but not least, I'm announcing a sale! :)
It's Spring, although it doesn't quite feel like it here in NC!  So, it's time to start Spring Cleaning!

Biography Unit

Ignore the boring post title.  I couldn't think of anything creative.

Two Posts. Two Days in a Row! What??? I've enjoyed my lazy Saturday. I slept until 11:30. I still can't believe it.  I never sleep past 8 on the weekends.  That goes to show my full level of exhaustion over the past two months. Then I met my former roomie for lunch. We spent three hours gabbing about teaching.  Sometimes I wonder,  "Do any other professionals spend all of the their free time talking about work?" It's what I love, so that's why I do it!

Anyway, I wanted to share some of the Anchor Charts from our Biography Unit we just finished up in Reading Workshop!  My kids LOVED this unit! They loved learning about famous Americans! It fit perfectly with President's Day, Black History Month, and Women's History Month!

I always like to remind you to not judge my handwriting. :)  Most of my anchor charts are done with my students, so I don't spend the time to make them to pretty!

We started the unit defining biographies and looking at the characteristics of the genre. (Ignore my mispelling of Biographies. There is a little p in there!). For this lesson, I arranged for us to go into the library. We talked about what a biography was and I showed some examples from our class library. Then, we went to the library and all of the students checked out Just-Right Biographies.  Then we filled out the rest of the anchor chart together after they had some time to read!

We also created some timelines! My kids were really into Good ol' George, so we read a Picture Book of George Washington and created a timeline together.

We also spent a lot of time talking about looking at the hardships and difficulties that our subject's faced!

We spent a lot of time talking about character traits at the beginning of the year, but my kids were still using words like kind, good and nice. So we talked about precise vocabulary.  I gave them sticky notes and they came up with some better words to use!

Here a few of some of the other minilessons that I didn't create an anchor chart for:
-Why is our subject so important?
-What can we learn about our subject's time period?
-What life lessons have we learned from our subject?

Here are some of our favorite read alouds from the unit!

We also spent a few days reading Narrative Nonfiction.

We did mini-book clubs because I had some short narrative nonfiction books for my kiddos to read! They love their book clubs!

We finished the Unit on Friday and we are moving into Test Prep. I am actually excited to get started with it! I can't wait to share how I'm teaching it this year.  Normally Test Prep is so boring, but I use Lucy Calkin's Format and I love it!! :)

Yesterday I linked up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday, I am having a mini giveaway! Be sure to check it out!! :)
